"Friends" debuted in the 1994-1995 season. In its pilot episode, Rachel Green, played by Jennifer Aniston, came into a local coffee house in New York City called "Central Perk," wearing a wedding gown. As the show went on, we know that Rachel was going to marry a rich orthodontist called Barry Farber. She realized at the last minute that she didn't love Barry, so she freaked out about the marriage and ran away, leaving poor Barry at the altar. Incidentally her best friend in high school Monica Geller (played by then Courtney Cox) was not invited to her wedding, so Rachel ran to her.

Since Rachel was born with a silver spoon, she didn't have to work for a living, and didn't know how to. Here her old drifted-apart friend Monica and her older brother Dr. Ross Geller (played by David Schwimmer) came to her rescue, as well as her new friends Phoebe Buffay (played by Lisa Kudrow), Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) and Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry). It turns out that everyone had a job (well, almost): Monica was a chef, Ross was a paeliantologist (please pardon my spelling), Phoebe was a masseuse and she played guitar and sang at Central Perk, Joey was an actor who always got weird or even bad jobs (if he is even lucky enough to get one), and Chandler was a data processor (it later turns out that nobody knows exactly what his job was). At the end of the pilot episode, everybody encouraged Rachel to cut her credit cards (which were paid by her dad), and got a "temporary" job as a waitress at Central Perk. Monica also decided to let Rachel stay at her apartment.

It turns out that everybody had some unusual stories:

Monica, in her childhood, was always overshadowed by her brother Ross, and was decided by her parents (her mom in particular) that she was never gonna get married. She was a neat freak and wanted everything to be in order and as clean as possible.

Ross was married to a woman named Carol, but later Carol found out that she was a lesbian, so they got divorced and she went to live with a woman named Susan. Carol also happened to carry her baby with Ross. Ross works at a museum.

Chandler hated Thanksgiving because his parents chose to tell him they were getting divorced on that particular occasion. When he grew up, he became a relationship freak, and was sometimes thought to be gay (which I think could be quite offensive to homosexual people). He lives across the hall from Monica's apartment with Joey.

Phoebe has the saddest history of all: Her dad Frank Buffay ran away when she was young, leaving her, her mom Lily and her evil twin sister Ursula. Later her mom killed herself by sticking her head in the oven, and she was forced to live on the streets when she was only 14. Later when she came to the city her roommate also killed himself, and she became Monica's roommate. After a while she could no longer stand Monica's obsession with tidiness so she went to live with her grandma.

In mid-season 1, Rachel ran into an Italian guy in their building called Paolo during a power outage. To Ross's annoyance (because he had a crush for Rachel since high school), Rachel and Paolo quickly developed romance. All that came to an end when Paolo made a pass at Phoebe during a massage. Just when Ross thought he'd still got a chance for Rachel, Barry came back for her. Their relationship didn't last too long, too.

Late in season 1 Carol went into labour, and delivered a baby boy. Ross and Susan had huge arguments over the baby's name, but later they agreed on Ben. After the birth, Ross was going on a business trip. At the same time, Rachel found out about Ross's crush for her from his birthday present. We'll see what happens next...
